Three numbers for the room and one for the door. Ten minutes with a tape measure saves a sofa coming back down the stairs.
Measure the width of the narrowest door and the tightest turn on the route in. Compare it with the “Door” figure on the product page, which is the smallest of the piece's three dimensions with the legs off. If the door is 5 cm wider than that figure, it goes through. If it is not, email us a photo of the problem and we will tell you honestly.
Measure the wall the piece will stand against, then subtract 10 cm each side so it does not look wedged. A 212 cm sofa wants a 232 cm wall. For depth, stand where the front edge will be and check you can still walk past; 70 cm of clear floor in front of a sofa is comfortable, 50 cm is a squeeze. Masking tape on the floor in the outline of the piece is the most reliable test there is.
Radiators, skirting boards and window sills take up space the plan does not show. Our sofas stand on legs 16 to 18 cm high, so a low radiator can sit behind the back rail; a deep skirting board pushes the piece 2 cm into the room.
Furniture comes in on its side or on its end, so the number that matters is the smallest of width, depth and height, not the width. Legs unscrew from every sofa and chair, which usually takes 15 cm off. Measure:
A straight stair with 90 cm between wall and banister takes every piece in the range. A stair that turns twice in a 180 cm square landing takes everything except the deep sofa and the 3-seat oak frame sofa, which need a 200 cm diagonal on the landing. The daybed and the deep sofa come in parts for this reason.
It is the number people skip and the one they regret skipping. Our pieces run from 37 to 46 cm and they are made for different bodies.
| Seat height | Who it suits | Pieces |
|---|---|---|
| 37–38 cm | Anyone who reads with legs tucked up and gets out of chairs without thinking about it | Low armchair, low linen sofa |
| 40–42 cm | Most adults; a relaxed, slightly reclined sit | Open-frame chair, spindle chair, oak daybed, slipcover sofa, round footstool |
| 43–45 cm | Taller people and anyone who likes to sit up with feet flat on the floor | Oak frame sofa, wool sofa, deep sofa, small sofa, woven stool, oak stool |
| 46 cm, with firm arms | Anyone who needs a push to stand up | High-back linen armchair |
Dimensions are for the first option of each piece. “Door” is the narrowest of the three, which is what must pass the frame; it already assumes the legs are off.

Measure the width of the seat at the front and at the back, and the depth at both ends; old windows are rarely square. Send all four numbers with the order and we cut to the smaller of each pair, minus 1 cm so the cover is not forced. Depth up to 55 cm is included; deeper costs no more but ask first.
Say so before the delivery is booked and we change the order to a piece that does, at no cost. If a piece arrives and cannot be got in despite the measurements on its page, it is treated as a return and the collection fee applies, which is why we would far rather you emailed a photo of the stairwell first. Write to us with the numbers.
